  13. SUBJECT:  MISC - Responders and their vehicles - Part 4/4
  14.      We should reiterate that we are talking about volunteers who
  15. are officially enrolled and who been authorized and dispatched by
  16. competent public safety authority to respond in the first place.
  17. We are talking about people who respond frequently. We are
  18. talking about people whose avocation is literally the authorized
  19. and regular response to an emergency.  We are NOT talking about
  20. volunteers, albeit well intentioned, who simply show up on their
  21. own to offer to help out.
  22.      In some parts of the country various emergency vehicle
  23. lights or specialized equipment, signs, or magnetic door signs
  24. are authorized. Local practices, customs, and laws should be
  25. observed.
  26.      All equipment and out-of-pocket expenses associated with
  27. your volunteers' duties with your government agency, the Civil
  28. Air Patrol, the Red Cross and other disaster relief or public
  29. safety agencies may be tax deductible. Professional volunteer
  30. responders keep records for this purpose. All expenses associated
  31. with a response vehicle, prorated to the percentage of its use
  32. for the volunteer activities discussed, invariably greatly
  33. exceeds the per mile rate authorized by the IRS for undocumented
  34. costs. Such costs include the cost of the vehicle, insurance,
  35. gas, oil, maintenance, repairs, car washes, and specialized
  36. equipment. The latter includes communications equipment,
  37. signaling and warning devices, maps, safety equipment, uniforms
  38. and specialized turnout or response clothing, their cleaning, a
  39. radio pager, and any other specialized equipment or supplies
  40. required or recommended by your agency. It pays to keep records.
  41. Check with your CPA and one who is, preferably, familiar with
  42. nuts like us. Yes, there are some volunteers who can't afford to
  43. quit being a volunteer!
